A Giant African Python Has Been Officially Confirmed by Herpetologists During a Field Expedition Update

The first thing the team noticed was how quiet it was. There was no birdsong or monkeys moving around in the canopy in northern Mozambique. The grasslands were flooded. They were only surrounded by a heavy stillness. The herpetologists followed a strange set of looping tracks through the reeds, as if heavy machinery had rolled through overnight. Their knees were wet, and their boots were sinking into the black mud. One of the researchers stopped, bent down, and ran a hand along the mark next to the bank. The track was broad. Too big.

Ten minutes later, they saw her.

A dark, strong, and slow-moving mass of muscle wrapped around a mound of termites. The snake, which was as thick as a truck tire, watched them with calm, amber eyes. The sunlight caught the small movement under her patterned skin.

The tape measure kept getting longer and longer. And on and on.

A major event that changed Giant Snake Records forever
The snake was an African rock python, which is the largest snake in Africa. This person looked fake even to people who study reptiles and amphibians for a living. In the warm, humid middle of the morning, its olive, brown, and black scales seemed to pulse as muscle moved beneath the surface. The certified biodiversity survey team and the local rangers moved slowly and carefully.

This was not a random sighting. The structured field trip had permits, GPS tracking, and standard ways to gather information. The python, which was calm but alert, took up almost the whole length of their aluminium boat.

Following strict field rules and measuring carefully
The measuring process began later, with a tarp tied between two acacia trees. One researcher held the heavy head, another held the middle, and a third watched the tail for sudden bursts of strength. The tape measure went along the spine and past three, four, and five meters. People started to talk less as they realised how big the animal was.

The last measurement was bigger than what most field guides say is the biggest size. This wasn’t a blurry picture taken from the side of the road or a story that was made up. The python was weighed, photographed, tagged with GPS, and written down in a very scientific way.

They wrote down the length, girth, estimated age, habitat conditions, and nearby prey. It was once just a rumour, but now it’s real information.

Why This Python Got So Big
When people tell stories about giant snakes, the snakes themselves often get bigger faster. People who look into stories about giant snakes eating farm animals find that they aren’t true. But in this case, the measurements were so good that even the most sceptical biologist was impressed. The python was the biggest of its kind ever seen, which is something that textbooks usually only talk about with caution.

Early notes from the field suggest that a rare set of circumstances is at play: there are a lot of prey animals like bushbuck and waterbirds, there is thick wetland cover that is great for ambush predators, and there isn’t much human activity. If a snake has enough food, shelter, and time, it can keep growing for decades. This woman was a clear sign of that balance.

How scientists keep an eye on a huge python
You need to handle a snake this big in a certain way. The first step is to watch the animal from a distance to see how it stands, breathes, and how stressed it is. Next, a slow approach is used, with specific roles for controlling the head and supporting the body. There is no sound or hurry.

After being held down, teams can use a fabric bag or holding tube. But with snakes this big, measurements are usually taken right on the ground. Not just guessing where the tape goes from one end to the other, it is carefully lined up along the spine.

Every centimetre is written down. There is a date and time on each picture.

How to Tell If Claims About Giant Snakes Are Real Online
Most people only see big snakes in pictures that go viral. How you look at things can change how they really are. People will see a snake as much bigger than it really is if you hold it close to the camera and they stand back. Things that are the right size, have clear angles, and shadows that don’t change help show the truth.

Many people have seen pictures that say there is a “50-foot python” in a village close by. When you look more closely, something seems off; the proportions don’t match or the scale isn’t clear. Being critically curious instead of cynical can help you tell the difference between making things up and finding out something new.

What This Big Python Tells Us About Africa in the Wild
This python didn’t just appear out of thin air. It took a long time to grow in a place with more wetlands than roads. For herpetologists, the animal is more than just a record; it is a living sign of how healthy an ecosystem is. Apex ambush predators only grow this big when there is a lot of food and their homes are mostly the same as they were before.

How tolerant people were was also very important. Even though the snake went through public areas, local communities and rangers let it stay. Fear, respect, and living together are all things that can affect which giants live long enough to be studied.
